Lucius Annaeus Seneca the Younger (c. 4 BC AD 65) usually known mononymously as Seneca, was a Stoic philosopher of Ancient Rome, a statesman, dramatist, and in one work, satirist, from the post-Augustan age of Latin literature. As a writer, Seneca is known for his philosophical works, and for his plays, which are all tragedies. His prose works include 12 essays and 124 letters dealing with moral issues. These writings constitute one of the most important bodies of primary material for ancient Stoicism. Provenance: signature for M Callis, Blackburn to the front. Approximately 7 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine fair to good condition titles in gilt, rubbed marked and scratched. Joints good condition sound, rubbed. Corners fair condition bumped and worn with loss. Boards poor condition marbled paper covered board with leather spine and quarters, worn with loss to the leather corners and marbled paper. Page edges good condition all tanned and darkened. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition tanned paper. End papers good condition tanned paper, subsequently tanned and marked.
