About this Item
This book is rated only Good due to some binding issues that I'll describe momentarily. You can see the covers in the photos. They have a sliver of rubbing/scuffing on the middle edge of the front. There are several thin scuffs just off the bottom edge of the rear cover. The label on the spine is intact but the red lettering of the word Selections can only barely be made out (I was able to with a magnifying glass). It says 'Selections from Jeremy Taylor' on the label. The spine is in nice shape. The top and bottom edges of the spine have held up quite well, just a little crinkling. The covers edges have some rubbing and light scuffing. The corners have rub-through. The page edges are mostly clean, with just two smallish tan stains on the middle page edge (as a result a tiny tan spot peeks over the edge of a half dozen or so pages). The spine has a slight to moderate forward lean. The covers are tight (tho the front one bows out a little). There are no cracks or spaces between them and any of the pages. There is a gathering of pages (129 to 144) where the bottom two twine bindings have come loose, while the two top ones are still in place. These pages can be seen to be jutting out at the middle and bottom page edges. This gathering may detach, and another gathering (145 through 160) has already detached. The detachment is perfectly clean. Pages 97 to 128 are okay but could develop an issue as well. I also found two groups of pages that had pulled over a tiny bit of the paper from the facing page. This is just across the juncture off the top edge, obviously very far from the print. There are three pairs of uncut pages at the beginning of the book. One is between the second Contents page and the facing first page of the book. I went through the pages pretty carefully and I don't think there any other uncut pages, but not certain. Cutting the pages was mostly done well, but there are a few instances of a jagged middle edge, one instance where a tiny bit of paper got pulled over to the facing page. There are also a couple of small edge tears, not much. The pages are mostly clean. I saw a few instances of very light amber spotting. I only saw a few instances of a spot of soiling. I saw two small top corner losses, far from the print, and just a few small top corner creases. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The inside covers and end papers are a dark brown. Very clean. Parts of the top edge of the rear inside cover and rear end paper have slivers of scuffing. I had originally intended to price the book at $95.00. Due to the binding issues I discovered while reviewing the condition I've cut that price significantly. 'Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667) was a cleric in the Church of England who achieved fame as an author during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. He is sometimes known as the "Shakespeare of Divines" for his poetic style of expression, and he is frequently cited as one of the greatest prose writers in the English language. He is remembered in the Church of England's calendar of saints with a Lesser Festival on 13 August. Taylor was under the patronage of William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury. He went on to become chaplain in ordinary to King Charles I as a result of Laud's sponsorship. This made him politically suspect when Laud was tried for treason and executed. He was briefly imprisoned several times. After the Restoration, he was made Bishop of Down and Connor in Ireland. He also became vice-chancellor of the University of Dublin.'.
