Book Description George T Juckes, 1899. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Very scarce book. Limited edition, no 3 of 5 only. Privately printed, Plate of George T Juckes, Book Merchant & Exporter, 325 St. Martins Lane, London and Brighton. 4 volumes: I xii, 383 pp, II xii, 376 pp, III xii, 373 pp, IV xii, 369 pp. Fine Bayntun binding. Unopened pages, AEG. Each volume has clean light marbled endpapers, blue cloth boards with quarter calf in blue, ornate devices to spine with copious gilt in excellent order and gilt title on morocco, in five bands. Minor wear to boards, slight marking to calf. Roquelaure was a courtier at Versailles, the court of Louis XIV, during the times of the Cardinals, Richelieu then Mazarin. There, as the unacknowledged translator writes, 'We see, as through a kaleidoscope, all the fascinating details of Court life during the most brilliant and withal careless period of French monarchy: in the midst of the gaiety the Duke was one of the shining lights." The Duke does not hold back. He names names - a daring move at a time when writers conventionally would only hint at a subject's identity through their initials.
