About this Item
This sea-faring novel about two seal hunters stranded in the Arctic ice was first published in two volumes in 1849. This new edition is part of a uniform series of Cooper's novels. There's a double frontispiece with two lovely engravings, separated by a tissue guard, after drawings by F.O.C. Darley, and some further illustrations in the text (although they amount to just a few tailpieces). Nicely bound in dark brown cloth-covered beveled boards with a sword and shield device in gilt on upper cover surrounded by a blind embossed decorative border. Spine ends and corners are worn, there's a small wormhole in rear gutter, the tissue guard is quite browned and the edges are a little browned. But still a very good, tightly bound and clean copy.
