A particularly rare Valentine Writer with hand-stenciled Cruikshank frontispiece printed in 1814. Provides sweet and amusing messages to send to your sweetheart, tailored to their profession. Includes messages for every trade from Actor, Fish-Monger, and Tallow-Chandler, to Auctioneer, Tailor, Pastry-Cook and Engraver. The entry for Bookseller is quite charming: "In vain I read what sages teach, Philosophy I cannot reach;- To read your charms is my delight, An index of your mind so bright; Consent to bind your fate with mine, And I am blest, sweet valentine" (pp. 20-1). 12mo in half-sheets (7.75" by 4.75"), pp. [2] 5-32 with hand-stenciled frontispiece, partially uncut, loose in original publisher's printed wrappers. 6 copies on OCLC, 2 in U.S. only (May 2022).
