Originally serialized in 'Fraser's Magazine' from November 1833 to August 1834. By Thomas Carlyle, a cultural critic known for his enormous influence on the intellects of the Victorian era. With an introduction by Ernest Rhys. This essay was first published serially in 1833-34. It foreshadows Carlyle's interest in revolutionary change and centers on the theme that the intellectual forms in which the deepest human convictions have been cast are dead and that new ones must be found to fit the time.
