About this Item
Period is 1856, just before the outbreak of the civil war. Setting is the beautiful Virginia countryside, and the narrative is peopled with unusual characters: the mountain people, grim disapproving "Republicans," and Sapphira's African slaves, who are, and doubtless were meant to be, the most interesting figures in the book. Chief theme is the subtle persecution of a beautiful mulatto girl by her jealous mistress. Previous owners name on bookplate mounted inside front board. Boards discolored. DJ chipped along edges, mostly at top of spine w/ small piece missing. There is a light water mark on the Dj. DJ protected/preserved in mylar wrap. Still a nice tight copy. Seller Inventory # 003655
