About this Item
8vo. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. iv + [364] pp., each story having separate pagination. Bound in original half morocco over marbled boards, rebacked in black morocco with original endpapers, spine in compartments, decorated gilt with contrasting maroon morocco title label, gilt. Some wear to extremities of boards but otherwise a good copy. Inscription of W. A. J. Gould and number 150 on front pastedown, repeated on title page. A collection of tales of mystery and imagination, only one by Poe himself, The Pit and The Pendulum; the others are by unknown authors. In fact the whole work is rather mysterious with its multiple publishers and unusual layout with what appears to be an analytical index at the front with no page references as each article is separately paginated. The break in the gatherings of ten and the restarting of the sequence may mark the change of publication date from 1857-58 as it originally appears to have been issued in at least two sections. The source and authorship of all the stories is nowhere recorded but the numerous joint publishers may represent the copyright holders. Certainly it is a scarce work and COPAC records only four copies, in the British Library, Oxford, Cambridge and the National Library of Scotland. ART / LITERATURE FICTION LITERATURE FICTION 19TH CENTURY ART / LITERATURE. Seller Inventory # 22479
