Book Description New York, Farrar & Rinehart, (1935)., 1935. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First edition, with publisher's slug on copyright page. Book slightly faded along top and bottom edges and with brownish tarnishing along the long edges and the spine gutters, endpapers browned at gutters and with glue marks in a couple of spots on the rear pastedown. Near very good, text block clean. Dust jacket beginning to split along one side but not in danger of coming apart (can be stabilized with acid-free tape if desired). Top edge of front panel worn with a few small chips, about 98% complete; spine chipped for about a half-inch from the left side to the middle and then with another V-shaped chip added to that on the right side descending about another 1/2 ", such that the "The" of the title is not there, and the letters "ng" and part of the final "s" and all of the "e" of "Smiling Corpse" are missing. Back panel chipped at top right corner (continuation of spine chipping) in blank portion only. Great illustration of the four detective writers on the front panel looking curiously at the murder scene. Very witty pastiche with lots of 1930's icons in cameo roles. Bookseller Inventory # 1290
