A lovely copy, wonderfully preserved. 450 copies were printed on Van Gelder paper. Mosher's choice of cover and interior design for this essay on man's search for himself and his need to go beyond accepted boundaries is restrained elegance. Though very pleasing, critics suggested it did not match the sonorous prose, and the four gold-stamped designs on the cover gave an impression of ethereal serenity at odds with the sentiments expressed in the text. These designs were created by D.G. Rossetti for the cover of the 1863 edition of Swinburne's Atalanta in Calydon, published by Moxon in London. Gilt decorations still bright as day of issue and cloth binding and contents are as new. Plain paper wrapper present but it is fragile with edge tears. Still, it did a marvelous job of protecting the book throughout almost a hundred years. Only flaw noted is slight remnant of what was probably a bookplate on front paste-down. Pages still uncut. Classicist work of a bygone era. Hatch 623. Octavo, 142pp + Colophon. Bookseller Inventory # 2676
