Book Description J. F. Dove, Dover, UK, 1828. hb. Royal 8vo, pp. 274. Butler (1692 - 1752) was an English theologian and Bishop of Durham. He was born into a Prebyterian home and studied at Oxford. In 1718 he was ordained in the Church of England. He held various positions in the church before finally being appointed Bishop of Durham in 1750, the richest see in England. His sermons are classics of the English pulpit. This title was first published in 1729. Our copy contains a 17 page Preface dated September 16, 1729, the original 15 sermons, and additional material not found in the first edition, to wit: "Six Sermons Preached upon Public Occasions", "A Charge Delivered to the Clergy at the Primary Visitation of the Diocess of Durham, in the year MDCCLI", and "Correspondence betwen Dr. Butler and Dr. Clarke. The boards (being printer's boards) are shabby, and a previous owner has taped the spine. Older rubber stamp of antique dealer to front free endpaper. Some pages show foxing and a few have marginal notes, but most pages are clean and bright. Binding shaken but contents intact. Not a pretty copy, but complete and perefctly readable. Would benefit form a suitable re-bind. Bound in original unsophisticated printer's board. Bookseller Inventory # 038770
