About this Item

A beautiful copy of the first trade edition with added attraction of having an extract from Percy's "Diagnosing The Modern Malaise" signed by Percy laid in. This was one of the gattherings of the first four sheets of the limited edition of Modern Malaise never bound. Pre-signed by Percy on the page of the gathering devoted to his signature, which is the first page of this laid in extract. Extract includes the first four pages of the text of the essay preceded by the signature page, blank recto side, title page and copyright page on recto side. There were to be only 300 copies of Modern Malaise with the signature of Percy, and obviously not all of these were actually bound in book form. There were 22 text pages in all to the limited edition of Malaise, four of which are in the gathering laid into this copy of The Second Coming. The full text of the essay can be found in an anthology of Percy's essays available in paperback. This copy of The Second Coming is in very fine, as new condition. No doubt never read as it retains its original crispness. Dust jacket likewise as new and not price clipped -- now protected in mylar. My price includes this first edition of The Second Coming plus the signed extract from the limited printing of Diagnosing The Modern Malaise. Size: Octavo, 360pp. Bookseller Inventory # 2951

About this title

Will Barrett of Linwood, North Carolina, is a depressed widower with a peculiar tendency to fall down in strange places. Allison, the girl in the greenhouse, has just escaped from a mental institution and is working hard to make a new life for herself. When their paths cross in a most unusual manner, a relationship begins that will help restore two struggling outcasts to new life.

What follows is by turns touching and zany, tragic and comic, as Will undertakes his own Pascalian wager in search of proof of the existence of God. Leaving his comfortable home atop a pleasant Carolina mountain and descending deep into the bowels of the long-unused Lost Cove cave, he is prepared to wait for a sign -- which may, of course, be death. What he is not prepared for is what actually happens.

From the Inside Flap:

Will Barrett, a lonely widower, suffers from a depression so strange and severe that he decides he doesn't want to continue living. But then he meets Allison, a mental hospital escapee making a new life for herself, living alone in a greenhouse. What follows is by turns touching and zany, tragic and comic, as Will goes in search of proof of God and winds up finding much more.
