About this Item

331pp SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY HOFFMAN ON HALF-TITLE PAGE, DATED 1939. Malvina Hoffman (1887-1966) was an American sculptor and a pupil of Rodin. Her monumental work, 104 life-size or heroic figures in bronze called "Races of Mankind" was done under a commission from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, whose Hall of Man they occupy. To procure material for this anthropological gallery, Miss Hoffman traveled about the world for five years. She wrote an account of those travels in Heads and Tales in 1936. This scarce title was published three years later and remains one of the most useful overviews of sculptural techniques and concepts ever published. good, tan cloth (hardcover) no dustjacket.
