PUBLISHER: Winnipeg : Ó.S. Thorgeirsson, 1919. DESCRIPTION: 107 p. ; 17 cm. NOTES: This work is an anthology of short stories translated into Icelandic. Included are stories by Henri Conti, Guy De Maupassant, Henri Horwood and other world authors. Very Good to VG+ in pebbled cloth, lettered in gilt. The author, Friðrik Jónsson Bergmann, was a clergyman of the Icelandic Lutheran Church. He taught Icelandic at Wesley College in Winnipeg. He was an an essayist and lecturer and editor of the Icelandic-Canadian Journal Aldamot (The Turn of the Century), published from 1891-1903. This journal was sponsored by the Evangelical Lutheran Church but was nevertheless a literary journal, containing lectures and book reviews. When Bergmann, a liberal theologian, parted ways with his more conservative colleagues, he founded the journal, Briedablik (Broad View, 1906-1914). He also wrote, compiled and translated other works.
