About this title

Synopsis:

Was Michiel de Ruyter the greatest sea commander who ever lived? Or simply the greatest sea-commander of the 17th century?

Some people see him as the man who saved the Dutch Republic, and ensured its independence. He knew how to fight a sea-battle on the grandest scale. He could also haggle like a canny Dutch merchant, achieving the release of Hungarian clergymen from Spanish captivity and that of Dutch sailors from barbarian imprisonment. Louis XIV, often his opponent, called him 'a man who did honor to humanity'.

In this book, nine leading historical authorities from seven different countries examine his astonishing career.

About the Author:

Jaap R. Bruijn (1938) in 2004 became emeritus professor of maritime history at Leiden University. He has published numerous books and articles on a variety of topics including the early modern Dutch Navy, shipping and commanders of the Dutch East India Company, and 20th century Dutch whaling.

Ronald Prud'homme van Reine (1960) is a historian. His doctoral dissertation (1990) was biography, Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen (1735-1819): Admiraal en filantroop. He subsequently went on to publish more biographies of naval heroes and general works on naval history.

Rolof earned a LLM degree and a MA degree from the University of Leiden. He also received a degree in comparative law (MCL) from Columbia University. He has spent the last forty years practicing law in The Netherlands Antilles, Rotterdam and Jakarta. Driven by his life-long passion for history, he founded Karwansaray Publishers in 2007, a company dedicated to promoting and sharing a multi-faceted view of history that crosses cultural and political boundries.
