About this Item
A history and description of the 900 year old mountain settlement of Rujal in Asir Province. Before the introduction of modern transport, it was an important stopping point for Hajjis from Yemen. Original gilt-titled burgundy leatherette in colour illustrated jacket 27x22cm. 77pp Arabic text + 43pp English translation by Mamdouh Al Kadeeri, illustrated in colour throughout. Covers and interiors fine, jacket very good, rubbed to the edges with small perforation to spine. Dated 1422 AH (2001-2). The author (b. Rijaal Almaa, Rujal 1957) was educated at the University of Riyadh, was a teacher and headmaster, and Supervisor of the Rijaal Almaa Museum. This describes Rujal's quarters, the mosque (one of Asir's biggest and oldest), the architecture of its traditional multi-storey stone buildings, fortresses, interior decoration and painting (with distinctive geometric and floral motifs), water supply, souqs, the Bedouin nomadic accent, the inhabitants, aural and written cultures (listing several important writers), women, food, customs (circumcision, marriage, engagement and wedding), humour, emigration to cities, and the Almaa Museum.
