Synopsis: The art by Miriam Schapiro reproduced in the accordion-fold volume Rondo was commissioned by Bedford Arts especially for the book. The 23 original collages were created in 1987-1988 and are made of handmade silkscreened colored papers and acrylic paint, some additionally embellished with fabrics or found paper, on Arches paper measuring approximately 24 x 18" each for the single panels and approximately 24 x 36 " for the two double panels. For Rondo I created a series of dancers who move in a nospace on a nostage against a painted background or backdrop. When the accordion-pleated book is opened to its full extent, all the dancers move out on the first twelve panels. On the return side, I collaged images on a flat plane. Imaginary bouquets, hearts that throb, masks, fans and kimonos are still-not in motion-as if the dancers on the front had caught themselves concentrating on one thought, one image. I used acrylic paint and silk-screened colored papers in the book. None of the works rely on 'drawing'. The drawing is done with scissors. When models pose for me, I stand before them, and, with colored paper in one hand and scissors in the other, I cut; the little bits of red or yellow fall on the floor as the tool chips away at a foot or bends with the page for a long line of the curve of the model's back as she leans over, scissors moving in one unstoppable cut and, finally, purple paper falls. When the pieces were cut and glued to the painted backdrop, I added things: pieces of fabric, found printed paper leaves. Puffy paint dots the Russian gown, and a xerox of a crocheted bag holds flowers. Forms which are both abstract and realistic are mixed together, as they are when we dream.' - Miriam Schapiro
