About this Item
Two volumes; 4 1/2 in. x 6 1/4 in x 1 1/8 in. (thick), frontispieces is a photographic view of Florence; printed title-page with the copyright date of "Romola": 1863. [i]-vi, pp. 1-328; Volume 2: architectural photographic frontispiece (S. Miniale), printed title-page. [i]-vi, pp. 1-310. Each volume contains 15, mounted photographic illustrations printed in brown tones, a total of 30 plates, mounted on blank paper sheets. These are quite similar to the "views" that were also used in early postcards, and view books sold to tourists. Most bear series numbers, but are not in numerical order; some have the original publisher's name: Edizioni Brogi; most have printed titling. Bound in vellum with the titling & gilt decorations on the spines, gilt & red borders on the covers, with titles and fleur-di-lis designs on the front covers; gold & brown floral-design endpapers, headbands, all edges stained red, volume one shows a red silk bookmarker bound in. Vellum spines show some darkening, dusting to covers. Age-related tanning to page and photo-illustration margins, with some small buckling to pasted on photo-illustrations; one inch cracks to upper front outer hinges of covers. Inscription in ink on the first front flyleaves: Helen B. Alexander Akron Ohio May 29, 1890. These are the types of photo-illustrated volumes sold to English-speaking tourists in Italy during the 1880-1910 period. Tauchnitz also produced other Italian-themed titles by Hawthorne, etc. Interesting source for how some of the sites appeared in the late 19th century.
