The systematic descriptive chapters of Volumes I A, I B and I C deal with acyclic carbon compounds containing one functional group comprising a substituent atom or group of atoms. Volume I D describes acyclic compounds having two functional groups on different carbon atoms and Volume IE is concerned with similar compounds with three functional substituent groups on separate carbon atoms. The present volume, the final part of Volume I, carries the theme a stage further and describes acyclic carbon compounds with four functional groups as exemplified by the tetrahydric alcohols, their oxidation products and their numerous derivatives. Logically, the text of the single chapter in this volume should have preceded the subject matter in Volume I F describing the important group of compounds comprising the acyclic penta- and hexa-hydric alcohols, their oxidation products and their derivatives, published in 1967, but difficulties encountered with preparing Chapters 19 and 20 made this impracticable. The volume concludes with the Cumulative Index for Volume I, Parts A-G
