5 1/4" x 6 1/2", illustrated paper-covered boards, unpaginated (approx 139 pp.), 21 full-page engraved plates, 4 of which feature Jumbo, the famous elephant, plus 30 or so smaller illustrations. Many pages uncut. A quaint collection of children's stories from 1885, well-illustrated with fine engravings. Features the title story and approx. 25 others featuring real and fictional characters and animals. Four stories of Jumbo, the elephant which fascinated Victorian-era children. Condition is Very Good with a pretty well-preserved pictorial cover (see photo enlarged). There are bumped and worn corners and spine ends and some fissures in the paper along the seams but overall a handsome cover. Internally good without any writing or foxing; only issues are that the front free endpaper has been removed and the next page, the blank side of the frontis illustration is torn a bit at the inner gutter (not affecting the plate itself); front hinge has a few short splits but is sound; otherwise good.
