About this Item
Colour illustrated wraps 17x24cm. Printed by Zinco Press in Riyadh. 89pp with many b/w photos + folding road map. Covers good, worn at the spine ends and small patch of scuffing at the back. Interiors generally very good with presentation ink stamps to title page and final leaf. Very rare. "Ten years ago only a few hundreds of miles of paved roads existed, of rather low design and construction standards". This describes the massive progress initiated by King Faisal in roads, rehabilitating and improving ports, and developing communication systems. The section on road building, which "was difficult in several areas", gives details of routes, distances, costs, and contractors during and before the present programme, including rural roads, feeder roads, the quality of construction and impact on time taken etc. Ports described include Jeddah, Dammam, Yanbo, Jizan, and several others under consideration. Photos show several Saudi landscapes and works in progress or completed. The folding map shows asphalt roads, roads under construction, designed and under design, proposed, railways, airports and ports. In addition to promoting development, the Ministry argues this has radically altered people's way of thinking: "It has more or less tamed them to accept settlement. It rid them of the fear from travel, venture and the unknown. It cleaned their minds from the deep routed feelings of racism and vanity. Consequently, the greed inherited in the clans, tribes and families melted away and disappeared" (pp4-5). Worldcat records 3 locations (Library of Congress, Stanford University, National Diet Library), none on Jisc. Seller Inventory # 4660
