Bound in a contemporary cathedral red leather, rchly decorated spine, marbled end-papers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of Herbert Wilson Green, his signature dated 1887 to front blank. titles and last section on poor quality paper now heavily browned. Herbert Wilson Greene (15 April 1857- 3 February 1933) was educated at Harrow and then from 1875 to 1880 at Pembroke College, Oxford. He received his B.A. in 1879, followed by his M.A. and B.C.L. in 1882. Greene then qualified as a barrister at the Inner Temple but was also a Fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford from 1888 to 1910. In his role at Magdalen, he was a Mods tutor in Classics, meaning he taught students for their first five terms before they took the public examination known as Honour Moderations (or Mods). Greene had a particular talent for Latin and Greek translation, and seems to have taken great pride in this aspect of his work. Apart from his scholarly interest in the ancient world, Greene s papers also show he was a keen heraldist, corresponding with other scholars on the subject. Upon leaving Magdalen in 1910 he lived in barristers chambers at Stone Buildings, Lincoln s Inn, and later in Essex and Sussex. Before his death he donated a number of books to Magdalen College Library. Many, if not all, of these titles are readily identifiable, as Greene adopted the habit of inscribing his name in the front of his books. This collection of Greene s papers is derived from various aspects of his life at Magdalen College. They include papers relating to his teaching duties; his scholarly interest in Latin and Greek translation; his personal interest in heraldry; and assorted documents and ephemera reflecting the day to day activities, interests and acquaintances of a college Fellow. Amongst his papers are many letters from colleagues and friends who shared in Greene s enthusiasms. His documents also reveal an enduring attachment to his old school, Harrow.
