This 5.25 x 7.0 inch, 273 page hardcover book is the apparent first printing of this title in 1873. The 1873 date is shown on the copyright page and there is no other year given anywhere with the 1872 date shown on the preface from the publishers. This copy is in very good condition with the dark green cloth covers bright and clean with the striking decoration and lettering in black-and-gilt on the front panel, and gilt decoration and lettering on the spine bright and undamaged by wear. The corners show wear although they have not worn through but the front panel top and bottom corners do show bumping. There is only a touch of shelf wear to the spine edges, crown and foot. The binding uses string which was threaded through the pages as the method of binding and several signatures in the book's interior have all but pulled free of the string, but they are still in place and the strings are still present and holding most signatures in place. The interior text pages show a previous owner's sticker on the front pastedown and a full-page elaborate drawing by an artistic previous owner on the inside of the ffep. The drawing is quite striking in its technique and fine detail, the intention of the drawing being to provide three ribbons of space to note the same owner's name, Christmas 1882, and a book seller's stamp from Chico, California. This title was the sixth title in the Girlhood series by the author and this title features a number of full-page illustrations by C. G. Bush, including the fronts-piece which is protected by a tissue guard. The interior text pages are in very good condition excepting the binding issue, which *is* intact but is quite fragile. 273 pages. Seller Inventory # 1505-726
