In 1884 congress authorized the formation of a fact finding board to visit the major European Gun Factories and steel mills to gather information with regard to building new Naval Gun and Artillery ordnance Manufacturing Facilities in the United States. This is an extremely important historical evaluation of the world capability to manufacture armaments. At this time the Europeans had transitioned from making cast iron guns to making Forged Steel Guns, while the United States had not yet started to develop this capability. The report details visits to all the major European Gun Factories and Steel Mills including interchange with the current (1884) United States Gun Manufacturing and Steel Making Facilities. This is an extremely important historical report on world armaments and Heavy Ordnance during the late nineteenth century period. 89 Pages.
