About this Item
ir Henry Coward (1849?1944) was a British conductor and composer. In 1889, Coward obtained a B.Mus. degree at the University of Oxford, and in 1894, became a Doctor of Music. In 1897, having established a reputation for conducting large numbers of singers he was invited to oversee a gathering of 60,000 school-children in Norfolk Park in Sheffield to entertain Queen Victoria. After World War I, Henry Coward faced criticism for being unable to conduct an orchestra, but was knighted in 1926. tan cloth over board, gilt title on spine and front cover. Shelf wear rub to top and bottom of spine, and bottom corners. Corners bumped. Binding tight. Signed Copy; ink inscription from the author dated Sept. 25th 1919 on first blank page. Note: This volume has loose inside front cover a b&w photograph signed by the author (May 26), a cutting titled 'Britain's most surprising musician', and the service sheet from Queen Street Congregational Church, Sheffield for the authors funeral.
