Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Second Impression. 1954. Second impression of the 1927 first edition. xviii, 414pp., a frontispiece and 278 black and white illustrations (mostly on plates). Robert Sutherland Rattray (1881-1938) was an early Africanist and student of the Ashanti. In 1906 he joined the Gold Coast Customs Service, and in 1911 he became the assistant District Commissioner at Ejura. Learning local languages, he was appointed head of the Anthropological Department of Asante in 1921. He retired in 1930. This volume is the second of Rattray's three ethnographic studies of the Ashanti, and completes the general survey of religious beliefs begun in 'Ashant'. Detailed data are presented on the form and importance of ancestor worship, spirits and gods, fetishes, oaths, and taboos in Ashanti religious beliefs and practices; arts and crafts surveyed, ceremonial rites are described, and various rites of passage, including customs related to birth, puberty, marriage, and death, are discussed and analyzed. In addition to Rattray's data, this volume contains contributions from a number of authorities as follows: C.G. Seligman, Dreams and Dream Interpretation; L.H. Dudley Buxton, The Biological Significance of Cross-Cousin Marriages in Ashanti; Vernon Blake, The Aesthetic of Ashant; G.T. Bennett, Wari; and R.R. Marett, Some General Aspects of the Ashanti Religion. The book is bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling on the boards and a patch of slight fading, probably the result of water or damp, around the bottom corner of the rear board. The spine is slightly faded with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers. There is an interesting handwritten label with five signatures on the front free endpaper indicating that the book was a gift for meritorious service rendered to the Bekwai Branch of the Agricultural Workers. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish book so a little extra may be needed for shipping to non-UK customers. Seller Inventory # gAfricaWest15
