FINE. Brown boards, gold embossed. Ledger sized volume. 125pp. This is a UNIQUE one-off copy of a UNIQUE handwritten book currently held in the Nevada Historical Society (Reno, NV) archives that records a creative year in the history of the Nevada Gold Rush boomtown of Pine Grove in Lyon County, Nevada - 1872. The book is a binding of exact image copies of the pages of 6 HAND WRITTEN newspapers done between May 1872 and Sept 1872. "First Volume of the Papers of the Pine Grove Lyceum 1872". The several different-named issues, are dedicated to "Literature, Arts, Science, Poetry, Procession and Improvement". Real events and local news, international dispatches from Europe, poems, humorous stories, sermons, wisdom & advice, political and economic editorials; a generally rich and insightful look at civilization come to a hard-rock gold mine town in its glory days. Pine Grove produced tens of thousands of dollars of gold weekly, had a population of a few thousand souls, and declined as fast as it boomed, eventually becoming one of Nevada's official 'ghost towns' in the 1930's. This absolutely rare glimpse into the era of self entertainment and betterment in the old west is a fascinating remnant of true Americana and the human spirit. The Lyceum members noted in the issue named "The Star" the following taxes and fines: Kissing a good looking young lady - 25c . Kissing a plain looking one - $2.00. Courting in the Dining Room - 25c. Courting in the Parlor $1.00. Courting in the Dark - $5.00. Not courting at all - $10.00. (Nevada life - written in Mark Twain's shadow!). UNIQUE and wonderful historical item. Oversized. International delivery requires expedited postage. [T001 - B167]. Bookseller Inventory # 001905
