About this title

Synopsis:

Unparalleled collection encompasses six centuries. Full scholarly documentation, biographies, 263 illustrations.

From Publishers Weekly:

The casual charm of Goya's Gossiping Women and the sublime tragedy of Zurbaran's St. Serapion are among the pleasures in this handsome scholarly catalogue of Italian and Spanish paintings in the Wadsworth Atheneum. Located in Hartford, Conn., the museum is especially strong in baroque and rococo art. This volume reproduces works by Caravaggio, Tiepolo, El Greco, Canaletto and Piero di Cosimo. Noteworthy among the 16 color and 247 black-and-white reproductions are Salvator Rosa's brooding landscapes, Jusepe de Ribera's psychologically astute portrayal of the philosopher Protagoras and Didier Barra's dramatic rendition of a Medici ship and a papal vessel meeting in Naples harbor. This volume is a sequel to the museum's 1978 catalogue of German and Netherlandish art. Cadogan is a curator at the Wadsworth Atheneum.
