8vo. 5.75 x 8 inches. xiii + [i] + [4] + 286 pp. Title page in red and black. Bound in black cloth, gilt, in dust wrapper, which has a faded spine and edge chips, including around tail of spine. Deckled edges. Some wear and staining to boards and a little browning of fly leaves, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by facsimile title page of first edition. Decorated by title page vignette. A reprint of this work of 1708, originally subtitled An Historical Review of the Stage. It covers the history of the London stage from the end of the Commonwealth period through the flourishing of Restoration drama to the year 1706, including a list of the players at Drury Lane. John Downes the author, was a prompter and bookkeeper at the Theatre in Lincolns Inn Fields from its opening in 1662, continuing until 1706. With extensive explanatory notes at the end, it was edited by Montague Summers (1880-1948), author and clergyman, who wrote on witchcraft and the occult in addition to his interest in seventeenth century drama. The Fortune Press was founded by R. A. Caton (1892-1971) in 1924 and continued into the post-war years, publishing some of the early works of Philip Larkin. POETRY THEATRE LIT.
