One of the first rosaries published following the institution of the Mysteries by Pope Pius V, preceding other editions that were published in 1578 in Venice (also used engravings by Adamo as in this edition) and in 1582 and 1587. Beautifully illustrated with 18 (of 20) engravings attributed to Adamo Scultori (1530-1585) who is also known as Adam Mantuano. Attribution by Brunet, and "Adam Sculptor" is shown on title page of this edition. Unfortunately two of the plates showing Christ carrying the cross and the Crucifixion were pulled from the book. The other side of each illustration missing had one page of introductory text for that section of the mysteriess. Thus, four pages total are missing, although I have included copies of the four pages including the illustrations as found by a previous owner on a website that had digital images of a somewhat later edition of this book (unknown which edition but the typography is different from the 1573). What remains in this book, however, are complete texts of each of the 15 mysteries of the Rosary as set down by Pope Pius V in 1569. And also present in this copy are the remaining 18 outstanding engraved illustrations, including a particularly wonderful Nativity scene. These engravings are all fulll page. And there are also many lovely engraved head and tail pieces and initial letters. The book is now in what appears to be an 18th century Italian binding, with endpapers supplied at that time. The endpapers revealing the paper used was laid paper appropriate to the 18th century. Book is square and tight and mostly very clean internally. Not counting a few pages of text which are extensively annotated by a very antique writing in Italian. Old ink gone brown and the writing has the look of no later than 18th century. Book is printed on good Renaissance paper. A few old stains on the marbled paper covers, mostly on back cover. Small old paper tag on spine but whatever was written on it has now faded. This copy does not, however, appear to have ever been in an insttitutional library. Because of the four pages present only in facsimile, this copy of 1573 has been significantly discounted from the price I think a perfect copy would be worth, considering the scarcity and importance of this as one of the earliest guides to the rosary mysteries as formalized by Pope Pius V in 1569.
