8vo. 5.5 x 8 inches. xi + [i] + 393 pp. + [3] + 14 pp. publisher's catalogue. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, front board decorated with gilt block. Deckled edges. A little wear to extremities and traces of foxing but otherwise a very good copy. Bookseller's label of D. Wyllie and Son, Aberdeen. Gift inscription of 1864 on first free endpaper with Clova House library stamp, also on title page. Illustrated by 10 engraved plates, including frontispiece. A second series of accounts, frequently dramatic, of natural history encounters and observations around the world. Philip Henry Gosse (1810-88) was a zoologist, field naturalist and religious writer who made a living from his writings, including studies of Canada and Jamaica. He became by the 1850s, one of the leading popularisers of natural history in Britain. The first edition of the Second Series was published in 1861.
