THE RECRUITING OFFICER. A Comedy (In Vol. 4 Bell's British Theatre)
Available From More sellersView all copies of this book
Bound in with three other plays in a very well copy of Vol. 4 of Bell's British Theatre. A stand alone volume that was once part of a set of 20 volumes. Most of the sets have been broken up over the years and each individual play disbound. This volume has, in addition to Farquhar's well known comedy The Recruiting Officer, plays by Mrs. Centlivre, "The Wonder," by Beaumont and Fletcher, "Rule A Wife And Have A Wife," by Dr. Hoadley, "The Suspicious Husband," and by Sir R. Steele, "The Conscious Lovers." Each play with its own title page dated 1776. There was originally an illustration plate preceding each of the plays but these plates are now lacking. However, the frontispiece plate to the volume is still present and of a lovely design. It shows a muse in classical clothing holding a mask in front of her and Pan with a flute crouching at her left and a dwarf or child beating on drums at her right. Book is tight in its original full marbled calf covers binding. The calf having traces of reddish brown mixed in with lighter and darker shades of brown in a swirling pattern on the lightly polished covers. Edges of covers gilt decorated. Joints with only minor rub and spine without any flaking although there are several vertical crease lines showing on the spine. These wear lines superficial. Title "Bell's British Theatre" in gilt still bright over red morocco. Five raised bands on spine. Internally a very clean copy with hinges intact. Some browning at edges of front and back endpapers and just a bit of browning at a few spots in the text. Virtually free of any foxing. The pages pleasantly age toned and of a good paper still supple. Other single volumes from the original set available with the exception of Volume 8 which was missing. Size: 12mo in Sixes (18.5cm).
