About this Item

A Fine tight copy in a Fine bright unclipped dust jacket. Rear-Admiral Sir John Franklin (1786 1847) was a British Royal Navy officer and Arctic explorer. Franklin also served as governor of Tasmania for several years. He disappeared on his last expedition, attempting to chart and navigate a section of the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. The icebound ships were abandoned and the entire crew perished from starvation, hypothermia, tuberculosis, lead poisoning and scurvy. Sir John Franklin made his last Arctic expedition in 1845 and within three years the crew of the expedition had disappeared. Noel Wright provides in this book a history of the various Arctic expeditions beginning in the 16th Century on up to Franklin's disappearance. Illustrated with photographs, line drawings and maps. 258 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 24186
