WWII North Africa/Italian campaign described from a GI's point of view. Written by one of the most famous war correspondents of that war. The book ends: "That is our war, and we will carry it with us as we go on from one battleground to another until it is all over, leaving some of us behind.When we leave here for the next shore, there is nothing we can do for the ones beneath the wooden crosses, except perhaps to pause and murmur, 'Thanks, pal.'" Ernest Taylor Pyle (1900?1945) was a Pulitzer Prize?winning American journalist and war correspondent who is best known for his stories about ordinary American soldiers during World War II. When Okinawa was returned to Japanese control after the war, the Ernie Pyle monument was one of only three American memorials allowed to remain in place. Pyle was among the few American civilians killed during the war to be awarded the Purple Heart. Carol Johnson (1916-2003) was a celebrated illustrator whose career spanned more than 35 years. He was a lead illustrator for the New York advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather and created cover images for numerous magazines, including Boys? Life, Colliers and American Weekly. Johnson passed away in 2003 at the age of 86. Hardcover with brown cloth board, silver lettering, but no DJ. Interior is tight, clean and text unmarked, POS on ffep. Copyrights 1943.
