8vo (7.5 x 5.38 inches), original blind-stamped purple cloth, gilt decorated spine, 353, [1] pages. Frontis, three plates. A series of humorous and sentimental fictional sketches of life in a rough settlement in what is likely western Michigan, from the author and lawyer Henry Hiram Riley (1813-1888), who had come to Kalamazoo in 1842. First published in the Knickerbocker magazine and then collected in 1854 by Hueston as Puddleford and Its People, this 1857 version adds five chapters to that edition. Wright II, 2044. Spine sunned and faded to tan, board edges sunned; some general wear and bumping; some light foxing and dust-soiling; a good copy. Seller Inventory # 21558
