Printed broadsheet (41 x 26 cm), executed in manuscript and signed. Folded, with clean break across horizontal fold, other folds slightly fragile, near very good. An official declaration that goods imported in August 1819 by Benjamin Reed on the sloop Sally from Marblehead, have been exported on the Schooner Ellen and proper fees paid. Major Thomas Melvill, grandfather of novelist Herman Melville, was one of the Sons of Liberty who, dressed as a Mohawk Indian, took part in the Boston Tea Party. For his service to the Revolutionary cause, he was given the plum political appointment of "Naval Officer" of the Port of Boston under Presidents Madison, Monroe and John Quincy Adams. The goods in question consisted of a significant consignment of Claret Wine and "Thos. Melvill" has signed this document in his function as Port Naval-Officer. Seller Inventory # WRCLIT88383
