Title: Pratique des Examens Militaires en Chine
Publisher: Chang-Hai, Imprimerie de la Mission Catholique, 1896. Reprinted by Cheng Wen Publishing Company, Taipei, 1971.
Publication Date: 1971
1 volume in 12, 132 pp., light blue cloth hard cover, with various illustrations, a very good copy, as new. A thorough explication of an often neglected and little known side of the famous Chinese examination system. The author describes and provides illustrations of the type of equipment involved in the military exams and traces the three part exam (cavalry, infantry, and written) through the various levels of examination (hsien, prefecture-provincal) for the first degree. The chu-jen exam is treated in detail, as is the ultimate examination for the chin-shih. This work is particularly relevant to the Ch'ing dynasty military examination system.
