Publisher: Harry H. Tombs, Wellington, 1946. VERY SCARCE. Very good hardback with poor jacket. Boards have a little minor compression to spine ends; slight warping, no inscriptions, binding firm, light tanning minor marks. Jacket is chipped, rubbed and marked with some small holes, large piece missing front front of jacket. 277 pages with 6 B&w plates (all present and in good order). The critically acclaimed book charts the seven months in the winter of 1943-44 when John Broad and fellow New Zealand soldiers were hidden from the Germans in manure heaps and freezing caves by Italian peasants, who went out of their way at enormous risk to shelter freed prisoners of war.
