First duodeciimo edition (139mm. ) Pp. [16], [2] 3 - 144. Title page with a woodcut vignette ( bowl of flowers ), head and tail pieces, and capital letters. Occasional very light waterstaining ,otherwise the contents are clean, bright and fresh. Contemporary quarter calf rubbed, over drab grey paper backed boards. A near fine copy retaining the original green silk page marker. First published in Paris: G. de Luynes, 1655, in quarto format with a frontispiece, the copy offered here is the first edition in duodecimo format and issued without a frontispiece again published by G. de Luynes, Paris, 1659. Antoine Furetière (1619 - 88 ), a lexicographer and novelist. He was a member of the Académie francaise but fell out with them over their dilitatory preparation of its dictionary, so he published his own which resulted in him being thrown out. He wrote a number of novels a number of which became very popular. He was a friend of Racine, Boileau, Molière, and La Fontaine. In his dedicatory epistle to the Poesiès he informs us that he composed the satires and other pieces shortly after he left college. This is first duodecimo edition is rare, The Library Hub discover ( on-line 4/23 ) locates only two copies - Oxford University Libraries.
