Book Description Arber, pp. 208-210; BMC NH, p. 1598; Nissen, BBI 463; VD 16, P4331; Wood, p. 522; DSB XI, pp. 95-98; cf. Hunter 158 (first ed). Second edition of Porta's work on the doctrine of signatures and it is sometimes held that he was the real originator of this doctrine. Giambattista della Porta (1535-1615) believed that the external form of man indicates his internal qualities. Expanding this theory to plants, he maintained that the external form of plants reveals their internal healing powers. The plants that resemble particular parts of the body should be considered as suitable medication for illnesses in those particular body parts. "The back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the Maidenhair Fern, which is an ancient specific for baldness; a Pomegranate with its seeds exposed, and a plant of "Toothwort," with its hard, white scale-leaves, are represented in the same figure as a set of human teeth" (Arber, p. 209). Porta also discusses the resemblance of plants and animal parts. A study of the character of the animal would provide clues to the medical qualities of the resembling plant. Phytognomonica was first published in Naples in 1588.In very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # S1408

Book Description Frankfurt Wechel & Fischer, 1591. (18,5 x 11,5 cm). (16) 552 S. Mit Holzschnittdruckermarke auf Titel, blattgroßem Holzschnitt-Porträt verso Titel und 32 großen Textholzschnitten. Kalbsleder des 18. Jahrhunderts mit Rückenschild und floraler Rückenvergoldung. Zweite Ausgabe des erstmals 1588 in Neapel erschienenen kuriosen Kräuterbuchs. - "A later devotee of the doctrine of signatures, who presented it with highly ingenious pseudo-scientific plausibility, was Giambattista Porta. He wrote a book about human physiognomy, in which he endeavoured to find, in the bodily form of man, indications as to his character and spiritual qualities. This study suggested to him the idea that the inner qualities, and the healing powers, of the herbs might also be revealed by external signs, and thus led to his remarkable work, the 'Phytognomonica'. The illustrations of the 'Phytognomonica' are helpful in interpreting Porta's view. The part of man's body which is healed by a particular herb, or the animal whose bites or stings can be cured by it, are represented in the same woodcut as the herb. For example, the back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the maidenhair - a capacity for curing baldness being suggested by the hair-like delicacy of the leaf-stalks of this fern. A scorpion completes a picture of plants with articulated seed-vessels; a shoot of heliotrope is also included, since, to Porta's vivid imagination its curved flower spike recalled a scorpion's tail" (Arber). Tinte etwas ausgelaufen. Stellenweise leicht gebräunt. Einband leicht berieben und bestoßen. Insgesamt schönes und gut erhaltenes Exemplar. - VD16 P4331; Ferguson II, 216; Nissen BBI 463; Brüning 628; Pritzel 7273; Plesch 616; Adams, P 1939; Arber, Herbals S. 251 f.; Dörfelt/Heklau, Geschichte der Mykologie S. 404. Book Description Francofurti, apud Ioannem Wechelum & Petrum Fischerum consortes, 1591. Royal-8vo (207 x 134 mm) pp. (16), 552, with woodcut portrait of Porta on verso of title, printer's device on title and 32 woodcuts in the text. Contemporary limp vellum. Second edition of this work on signatures in plants which was originally published in Naples in 1588. "It is sometimes held that della Porta was the real originator of the botanical Doctrine of Signatures in any approximation to a scientific form. The theory was that Divine Providence had formed plants in such a way as to indicate the ailments they would cure (e.g. a walnut looked like the human brain, so would cure head ailments). Protagonists of this theory quarrelled violently with those who believed in astrological medicine ." (Hunt). The elaborate woodcut title shows a.o. a lynx, emblem of the Accademia Lincei, of which Porta was a member. Galileo and Colonna were fellow associates in that society. "The book has a genuine scientific merit as well, for it groups plants ecologically by locale and distribution" (Anderson p. 198). The woodcuts are of a very high quality and rare praised as such by Arber. "The illustrations of the 'Phytognomonica' are helpful in interpreting Porta's view. The part of man's body which is healed by a particular herb, or the animal whose bites or stings can be cured by it, are represented in the same woodcut as the herb. For example, the back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the maidenhair - a capacity for curing baldness being suggested by the hair-like delicacy of the leaf-stalks of the fern. A scorpion completes a picture of plants with articulated seed vessels; a shoot of heliotrope is also included, since, to Porta's vivid imagination its curved flower spike recalled a scorpion's tail" (Arber, Herbals pp. 251-2). Some slight browning.Johnston 134; Nissen BBI, 463. Bookseller Inventory # 6302
