The famous Dutch physiologist, Jacob Moleschott (1822-93), published this important treatise on metabolism, which contains numerous analyses of organic substances, while he was at the University of Heidelberg. He also taught at Zurich, Turin, and Rome. As one of the protagonists of the materialistic school, Moleschott considered life a magnificent process of metabolism. In the preface to the present book he writes: "I am clearly and distinctly aware of the fact that I have erected a new scientific structure in this form." D.S.B. 9:456-457. Rothschuh, pp. 176-177.
