About this Item
(no dust jacket) [light wear at extremities, a bit of soiling to page edges, one-time owner's pencil name and date on ffep]. (frontispiece, two B&W film stills) A farcical comedy of manners by the noted screenwriter and playwright, the basis for the 1926 M-G-M film of the same name starring Conrad Nagel and Aileen Pringle, for which this is the tie-in. This is the earliest published book credited to Herbert, and appears to have been initially (or perhaps only) published as a novel, rather than the play on which the movie was claimed to have been based. (There is also no indication that a play by Herbert of that name was ever produced or published.) After a couple of prolific but relatively lackluster decades as a Hollywood screenwriter, Herbert achieved a more notable success in the theatre, with "Kiss and Tell" (1943) and "The Moon is Blue" (1951), both of which enjoyed two-year Broadway runs and were adapted (by Herbert) into successful films. NOTE that the Arnie Davis bibliography of photoplay editions and movie tie-ins calls for there to be four stills bound in with the text, but that the present book has only two, in addition to the frontispiece -- which is NOT a still from the film, but a black-and-white illustration. This, I can't explain -- but the book in any event, is scarce in any printing. NOISBN. Seller Inventory # 19876
