Size of binding: 6 in. x 8 in. x 1 1/2 in. (thick), half-title; tipped-in color frontispiece with title-printed tissue guard; title-page with two designs printed in black; dedication page; contents page; half-title. [10]pp., pp. 1-[126] + [2]pp. map. Illustrated with a total of 16, tipped-in color plates, each with a title-printed tissue guard (the tissue guard of plate [10], at p. 68, shows a horizontal tear across most of the lower section); and two other designs in black on white, at p. 1, p. 14, and a diagram at p. 125. An undated, but fairly early English printing; ca. 1915-35, of the smaller size trade edition. Specially bound in full maroon, crushed morocco leather. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, England for Marshall Field and Company (with this stamped on the top and bottom edges of the upper and lower leather turn-ins of the inner front cover). With five raised bands on the spine, with dark brown title labels with gilt-lettered titling, and richly gilt floral designs in compartments, featuring various tools: bird in flight, butterfly, bee, dragonfly, in the center of the compartments, with gilt floral borders on the upper and lower cover margins, gilt borders on the cover edges, inner gilt dentelles on the leather turn-ins; sewn headbands, all edges gilt, with chintz-style colored floral design endpapers. The cover corners show rubbing to the leather surface, some light scratches to the outer covers, a few tiny wax spots to the spine. The paper shows general, age-related tanning, as do the mounting pages for the plates. A few scattered tan spots, or minor stains are present to a few page margins. A specially produced, gift-type fine binding, made to be sold by the Marshall Field & Company, department store in Chicago. Scarce item. Sold as an example of this type of binding. Weight: 1 1/2 lbs.
