About this title

Synopsis:

This volume is the official publication celebrating the performance of the world-famous Passion Play in the year 2000 in Oberammergau, Germany. It focuses solely on the religious spectacle which is performed every ten years and shows unique pictures taken during the final rehearsal. An interview, a short essay and a chronology, give an insight into the staging of this massive, historical production, drawing the reader into the 40th re-enactment of this performance.

From the Publisher:

The Passion Play dates to 1634 when villagers, grateful for having been spared the ravages of the Plague, pledged to present the story of Christ every ten years as a token of thanks. Over 2,000 inhabitants of the tiny Bavarian town particpated in that first performance, and even today only villagers are allowed to take part in the six-hour production. By 1900, the play boasted 175,000 visitors, and since 1934 over half a million people have flocked to witness this spectacular event. In the making for over two years, this year's production is directed by the acclaimed Christian Stukl, and promises to continue the stron artistic tradition of the play.

This richly illustrated volume is the official publication celebrating the performance of the world-famous Passion Play in the year 2000 in Oberammergau, Germany. Focusing solely on the religious spectacle, renowned theatre photgrapher Brigitte Maria Myers' thoughtful images bring this outstanding event to life. An interview, short essay and chronology give insight into the staging of the moving performance, offering the reader a unique perspective into this exceptional tradition.
