Albumen photograph in 5 panels, each measuring approx. 8 x 5 1/4", totaling 39". Going from left to right, these are captioned Neutral Bay, Milson's Point, Lavender Bay, Panorama of Sydney & Harbour, Darling Harbour, Berry's Bay & Parramatta River. All have the notation of the photographer, "J.P." on the print. The vantage point is near or possibly on Holtermann's Tower. Paine started working as a photographer in 1869 in Tamworth, NSW, and moved to Sydney on his marriage to Mary Baker in 1874. In 1875, his work was praised in the Sydney Morning Herald; he exhibited photographs at the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879, winning a silver medal of the 1st degree of merit; he exhibited at the International Colonial & Industrial Exhibition, Amsterdam, 1883; he was in New Guinea with the Australian Squadron in 1884; he exhibited International Exhibition Calcutta in 1885, winning a silver medal with 1st class certificate with his harbour photographs praised; he exhibited at the Colonial & Indian Exhibition, London in 1886. An uncommon Sydney panorama; although the individual views are recorded, we could not locate a copy of the panorama on Trove in either the National Library or the State Library of New South Wales.
