About this Item

Weill, Berthe. Pam! . . Dans l'oeil: Ou trente ans dans les coulisses de la peinture contemporaine 1900-1930. Paris: Librairie Lipschutz 1933. 325p + 4 pls. (described below). Good paperbound (newly rebound, with most of the original front paper cover laid down). Internally very good. In a handsome custom-made clamshell box (rust cloth, gilt-stamped black spine label); small stain to one of the hidden sides of the box). No. 97 of 500 copies on velin du Marais. In French. ** Memoirs of this pioneering dealer and champion of modern art. In her biographer's words, Weill, "a Jewish woman of modest origins," "was the first woman ever to open an art gallery which she did in a tiny little shop in Montmartre in 1901." (It was some decades before other women followed her example.) She was the first dealer to show the paintings of Picasso (1902), Matisse, Bonnard, Braque, Dufy, Leger, Maillol, and others. She showed the Fauves very early on, various women artists, and in 1917 she gave Modigliani his only exhibition during his lifetime. A survivor of two world wars, she died in her mid-80s in 1951. The plates are two by Picasso (including frontispiece portrait of Weill) and one color pochoir each by Dufy and Pascin. Shipping/handling may be extra; please keep this in mind when ordering. Store Description

I¿ve been selling and appraising GOOD HORSE AND ART BOOKS since 1973, first by mail as Blue Rider Books, and since 1983 in the full-time open shop that I share with H.L. Mendelsohn (whose books are also on ABE). We¿d love to have you visit the second-oldest secondhand bookshop in Cambridge, just outside Harvard Square (open Tuesday-Saturday noon to 6, or by appointment). If you can¿t make it, go to www.bledsoebooks.com for many (but by no means all) of my books. My inventory of new, used, and rare equestrian books is one of the largest in the U.S., with special depth in Paul Brown, 19th-century books, dressage, and ephemera (paper items). I love to seek out the obscure, the uncommon, and the overlooked. Harvey Mendelsohn and I also offer a room full of out-of-print scholarly titles on the fine and applied arts, especially art history, architecture and planning, book arts, gardens, 20th-century ceramics, photography, and exhibition catalogues. And you¿ll also find some children¿s books, cookbooks, titles in cultural history and philosophy, and other general books. Many of our books never make it online, so if you¿re looking for items you don¿t see here, please phone or e-mail. Then maybe you, too, like hundreds of happy customers over the years, will say, ¿You have it? YOU¿VE MADE MY DAY!¿
