The first physician-in-chief to Johns Hopkins Hospital, Osler was, in the words of one colleague, "probably the greatest figure in the medical world; the best known, the most influential, the most beloved. . . . His life embodied his precepts, and his students cherished his words." (Johns Hopkins Alumni Magazine, 1921). Osler was likewise known for "the charm of his literary style, his love of literary allusions born of his wide reading, his kindly advice and graceful humor, and his practical common sense combined with high ideals of scholarship and of life."
