Velvet fronted Nuthatch (1/2 natural size). ***A good copy in dark olive-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. Top edge of text-block gilt; fore-edge and bottom edge of text-block untrimmed (rough-cut, as called for). Contemporaneous owner's place and date: 'Delhi May 1944 in blue ink to top of front free endpaper. Front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers and fore-edge of text-block slightly foxed. No foxing to interior pages which are clean. Boards faded and rubbed. Spine faded. Corners of boards bumped. Spine rubbed. Head and tail of spine rubbed and frayed. Light split beginning to spine. No dustwrapper. ***136mm x 162mm. xxxviii prelims (preface, contents and introduction by the author) plus 549 pages including index to rear plus two-page publisher's advert to rear. ***'In the second edition the number of species described at length was increased to 275, and that number has now again been increased to 300. In the second edition, as a new feature, some 230 other species were mentioned in short paragraphs, so that in all over 500 species were brought o the notice of the observer. Most of these short paragraphs have been added to this new edition, and in consequence the reader will now find his attention drawn to some 550 Indian birds. It is hoped, therefore, that no really common or striking bird in any part of India, other than those of very local distribution, has failed to find place in this book. An appropriate number of new illustrations have also been added, and I hold myself fortunate that these were completed just before the lamented death of Mr H. Gronvold, as his plates and figures contributed so materially to the success of the first two editions.' (Quote from the preface to the third edition by the author). ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 2791
