About this Item
Paradise Lost, A Poem in Twelve Books by John Milton. To which is prefixed The Life of the Author. John Ruskin's (1819-1900) copy of Milton's Paradise Lost with John Ruskin s bookplate: "Ex Libris/John Ruskin/Brantwood." Ruskin's bookplate printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press is affixed to the front pastedown. This book is the one he used in his library at his home Brantwood in Coniston Water, in the English Lake District, from 1872 until his death in 1900. John Ruskin was an artist, critic and social reformer. He was hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th century and his influence reached across the world, inspiring everyone from Charlotte Bronte to Mahatma Gandhi. Without question one of the most important Victorians of all time. Today his ideas and concerns are widely recognised as having anticipated interest in environmentalism, sustainability and craft. John Milton (1608-1674) is generally regarded as one of the pre-eminent writers in the English language, best known for this epic poem, Paradise Lost (1667). Written in blank verse, Paradise Lost is widely considered to be one of the greatest works of literature ever written. This book is a nice example showing the connection between two great thinkers and writers. Small volume in original three-quarter tan leather over marbled boads. Spine gilt decorated with slightly raised bands, black leather spine label simply titled Milton. Two engraved frontispieces. vii, 304 pages. A very good copy, see photos. Seller Inventory # 46448
