About this Item
"Original Drawings of the Botanist Maund & Henslow" Vol. II Twenty-nine watercolor and ink on a card of floral subjects on card Card size: 9 ¾ x 7 ¾ in. ca. 1838 Provenance: Inscribed by Agnes Muriel Porter, gift to her by her great aunt Sarah Maund, the daughter of botanist Benjamin Maund. Partial collection of botanical watercolors, twenty-nine of the remaining watercolors from volume two of this artist's work. The index in the beginning of the volume indicates there were originally fifty (50) watercolors. While only a few of the original works from this collection are still extant, what remains in the way of drawings and marginalia shed light on the general practices of botanical illustrations of the mid to late nineteenth century. One watercolor, 74. Justicia speciosa, is signed Mrs. Withers Del.' Augusta Withers was an artist and art teacher who worked on numerous books and magazines such as The Botanist and Curtis's Botanical Magazine. She became Flower Painter in Ordinary to Queen Adelaide. The remaining endpapers provide some additional information on Maund and Henslow's work in that they indicate the names of other artists whose work once graced these pages. Including Miss Taylor, S. Mound (presumed Sarah Maund), Mills, Miss Hal, and the illustrious Mrs. Bury. Most of which were likely completed by Eliza and Sarah Maund for their father, Benjamin Maund. The Misses Maunds' work has a vibrance and delicacy to match any of their contemporaries. Though Benjamin Maund achieved substantial fame in botanical circles and became a fellow of the Linnean Society, the lives of Eliza and Sarah remain largely undocumented. Loca: 6.3BC.19F.
